            About

The U.S. inland navigation system consists of 8,200 miles of rivers maintained by the Corps of Engineers in 22 states, and includes 276 lock chambers with a total lift of 6,100 feet. The highly adaptable and effective system of barge navigation moves over 625 million tons of commodities annually, which includes coal, petroleum products, vario other raw materials, food and farm products, chemicals, and manufactured goods (Reference Corps Navigation Data Center).

The shallow draft waterways have many unique characteristics and difficulties over coastal harbor and ocean navigation; river levels can change by over 30 feet in a seasonal cycle, the navigation channel can shift significantly within the river banks, and shifting yet ever present river currents pose constant challenges in these confined waterways. Electronic chart systems can offer significant benefits to vessels including accurate and real-time display of vessel position relative to waterway features, voyage planning and monitoring, training tools for new personnel and integrated display of river charts, radar, and Automatic Identification Systems.

This standard, which is based on the S-57 data transfer standard, allows for features which are unique to inland waterways to be accurately encoded on the electronic charts.  For example, features such as Fleeting Areas, Lock Walls, and Casino Boats, etc. which are not included in the S-57 standard (designed only for maritime e), can now be accurately charted ing this standard.

            Data Download & Services

The Inland Electronic Navigational Chart (IENC) program has relied heavily on its many partners over the years for reliable feedback on the IENC products. The IENC program encourages eage of the following downloadable products for electronic charting systems, GIS mapping applications, programming envirnments and web-base clients. Please do not hesitate to contact the IENC program if you have any questions or comments.
Charts Download: ers of these IENCs should be aware that some features and attribute information could have significant inaccuracies due to changing waterway conditions, inaccurate source data, or approximations introduced during chart compilation. Caution is urged in e of these IENCs or derived products for navigation planning or operation, or any decisions pertaining to or affecting safety of vessel operation.
RSS Feeds: is an XML-based format for distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news). ing RSS, Web content providers can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, updates, news links, headlines, and summaries. (source: opm.gov).
XML Catalogs: is for dynamic retrieval of IENC products - S-57, esri and KML. The XML catalog allows ers to configure automatic data updates for software clients, query for product updates and is scaleable to accomodate future products.
Dynamic Web Services: IENC data have been transformed into shareable application services based on OGC standards, and offered as ArcMap Services, Web Mapping Services (WMS), Web Feature Services (WFS) and KML Services. These services are primarily for client-based web mapping applications.
